Placement of dental implants

Are you a candidate for this procedure?

Most people can receive dental implants regardless of their age. As long as they are in good health, there is a very good chance that they can receive dental implants. Dental implants are a treatment that has a very high success rate for the right candidates. For properly selected candidates, the success rate of dental implants is around 95%, according to several studies

Important factors determining success in dental implantology

Good bone density

When a person has lost teeth for a long time, the jawbone may lose volume and density. Indeed, the absence of the roots of certain teeth means that bone growth ceases to be stimulated. However, the bone condition of the jaw is an essential factor in the placement of implants. This allows them to integrate well with the jaw bone and gives them excellent stability. When the bone density is not sufficient, a bone graft can be performed to restore volume to the jaw bone. This surgery must then be performed before the placement of the implants.

Good general health and good oral health

In terms of general health, it is important not to suffer from certain problems such as cardiovascular disease or uncontrolled diabetes. Indeed, it could affect the body’s ability to withstand the surgery well and the healing process following it. This is why one must be aware of the general state of health of the patient.

In terms of oral health, the tissues of the gums and periodontium must be in very good health to receive dental implants. Indeed, the presence of gum disease may hinder the healing of oral tissues.

If you are a smoker

Several studies have shown a delay in healing in smokers, but also the appearance of complications. Cigarette smoke actually negatively affects different stages of the healing process.

Cigarette smoke contains more than 4000 different substances, including carbon monoxide and nicotine, which act directly on wound healing. Carbon monoxide causes a decrease in tissue oxygenation and poor blood microcirculation.

For its part, nicotine has a vasoconstrictor and thrombogenic effect, which reduces blood flow and the supply of nutrients essential for tissue healing. Smoking also causes an alteration of the immune response since we can notice that the influx of cells of the immune system is less important in smokers.

In terms of oral health, the tissues of the gums and periodontium must be in very good health to receive dental implants. Indeed, the presence of gum disease may hinder the healing of oral tissues.

Pregnant women

The dental health of the pregnant woman to some extent determines that of the future child. You must therefore strive to maintain optimal dental health, while minimizing interventions with your dentist to reduce certain risks for you and the fetus. While it is common to postpone certain dental treatments until after the birth of the baby, this in no way implies that all dental treatment should be prohibited for pregnant women.
